Where to eat on a budget?

My fiance and I will be traveling on to Paris on our honeymoon at the end of June/beginning of July. We%26#39;re looking for places to eat on a rather tight budget: bistros, patisseries, where we can buy stuff for a picnic. I would love to hear everyone%26#39;s suggestions. We will be staying in a quiet hotel a few blocks from the Bastille, but we%26#39;ll be all over Paris over the week. Also, anyone have food suggestions for our day trips to Versailles and Chartres? Thanks in advance!

My suggestion for lunch in Chartres is a wonderful little restaurant done on the banks of the old Eure River, amid lovingly restored old--24th-25th century--homes. Le MOULIN de PONCEAU--21 rue de la Tannerie (at the bottom of the hill, below the cathedral at the Pont de Nimes. It id a converted mill with a dining terrace on the banks of the river. I%26#39;m not sure if it will fit your budget though, The three course prix fixe luncheons begin at approx 25 Euro per person....but the food is wonderful and this may be the very BEST setting in Chartres.

I like Au Rendezvous des Amis at 10 rue zSt Croix de la Bretonnerie in the Marais (near corner of rue Vieille du Temple. At lunch they have a fixed price menu for under 15 Euros with a main course, wine and coffee. At night I have eaten for about the same amount having a salade de Chevre Chaud and a glass of wine. For a really cheap but filling meal for lunch, go to one of the falafel roll places on rue des Rosiers like l%26quot;As du Falafel, or the try the time honoured fresh baguette from a patisserie and some cheese and ham. More delicious than any sandwich you will find outside France. Eat your lunch in the Place des Vosges or some other pretty place.

Thanks for the advice...they%26#39;re on our list!

Yes i took one of my groups to the Moulin de Ponceau, and it was really nice, they kept taking pictures of that beautiful (and romantic) place, and the food was good. In Versailles i would say the Flotille (restaurant area) which is very good, well located inside the park near the canal, but better reserve before. Don%26#39;t miss the Hameau de la Reine at the back of the park, very romantic...

Hi ISUCyHopper -

For suggestions of places to eat in and around the Marais, which will be close to your hotel check out the thread with the subject %26quot;Marais eateries.%26quot; A search of the forium for budget restaurants will turn up dozens if not hundreds of other suggestions all over Paris. Look especially for references to a restaurant named Astier, and for a thread on restaurants near Republique many of which will be close to your hotel.

For picnic stuff there are plenty of shops all around the area. The rue St. Antoine is a good place to start. There are also a number of street markets around. One of the biggest and liveliest markets in Paris is on the rue and place d%26#39;Aligre, a few blocks east of the Place de la Bastille.

Have a wonderful honeymoon - and an even better marriage!
