Gare Montparnasse area at night during summer

People have advise to stay away from train stations at night.

I%26#39;ll be in paris in august and i know its summer there and generally the sun doesn%26#39;t go down until 10pm.

My hotel is around 5 min walk from Gare Montparnasse. Is it quite safe in that case to drag my suitcase from the station to the hotel at 9:00 - 10pm? Or am i better just arranging transfer from the airport?

Which hotel is yours?...generally speaking, it should be fine... there is a lot of activity in this area, lots of bars/cafes, cinemas, traffic... you can figure out about how far the walk is by using www.mappy.com

You could take a cab from Gare Montparnasse, although the taxi might not agree if the drive is too short.

I%26#39;ve been around Gare St Lazare area, blvd des Batignolles at night...that%26#39;s much creepier than Montparnasse. Kind of dark, not that many people walking about, nothing much open.

Montparnasse is definitely a different atmostphere.

At 9-10 PM the neighborhoods around the Gare Montparnasse will just be getting their %26#39;..second wind..%26#39; for of day and will be active and very safe for walking around.

how about in the actual train station/train itself - is it generally v quiet and not a good idea to hang around too long like other train stations in paris?

One more thing, catching RER at that time should be quite safe right - (not just to Gare Montpartnasse but to all small train stations in general)? Is it very empty or are there still quite some people on it?

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;although the taxi might not agree if the drive is too short.%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;

Here is a nice little fact for all of you visitors... taxis waiting in a taxi queue do not have the right to refuse you a ride based on distance, even if you are only crossing the street, they have to take you... its the law, and they hate it and my try to tell you differently.

For their protection, the minimum fare is 5 euros, regardless of the meter.

To avoid the %26quot;no%26quot; fight, I don%26#39;t tell the destination until I am in the cab and it is too late.

During Eastern 2004, we stayed at the hotel Le Meridien Montparnasse, which is located opposite the Gare; we read also that the Station%26#39;s area wasn%26#39;t safe at night, well it was safer than other places in Paris ; we never met someone creepy and we never felt unsafe; in fact the lively Montparnasse Avenue is 5min from there. You should not be afraid. The only street that you may call unsafe is the Rue de la Gaite in which there are many s*x shops.

The station being creepy at night is Gare du NOrd in my opinion, gare Montparnasse is fine, i often go there, exiting from the metro at night to catch my last bus home, and i have always felt safe, there are always many people around, aspecially on Boulevard du Montparnasse.
