On Place du Tertre near the Sacre Coeur only trust the artists that are actually painting under your eyes, as some %26quot;clever ones%26quot; buy from Taiwan and sell that as their own work...

SummerVisitor.

You pose a very good question. raphy is certainly correct

about purchasing from a working artist.

Several trip back I walked around the square at Montmartre

and viewed the working artists and the work hanging.

I selected the artist I was interested in and whose work I

liked. We spoke briefly while he was painting and I then

selected a small oil painting (no frame, I framed it at home).

I could not be more pleased with the art.

Best Wishes

Even then you can%26#39;t always be sure. I%26#39;ve heard of %26#39;..schlock art..%26#39; mills (usually located in the far east) who sell largely completed canvases (they price them %26#39;by-the-pound%26#39;). The %26#39;..starving street artist..%26#39; then sets them up on an easel and begins filling in the final details by %26#39;..formula..%26#39;. Technically it%26#39;s still %26#39;..original..%26#39; work, since these canvases were all painted %26#39;by hand%26#39;---but there%26#39;s original art and then there%26#39;s %26#39;by-the-pound%26#39;, formula, %26#39;schlock-art%26#39;. But if you like the picture...I suppose it really doesn%26#39;t matter.

There are other %26#39;..starving street artists..%26#39; who do work from blank canvas. But they usually have three or four %26#39;..formula..%26#39; pictures in their repetoire and that%26#39;s pretty much all they paint, day-in-day-out. One of the clever %26#39;sales gimmicks%26#39; they use to draw the potential customer in is to ask them what color they think the flowers or a bullding should be; then paint it that color. The potential customer then feels as if the painting were done %26#39;..just for them..%26#39;. Et Voila !!! another sale for the not-so-starving street artist. If they%26#39;re clever, some of these guys earn a decent living from %26#39;..starvation..%26#39;.

I%26#39;m not clear on what you mean by local artists. Street %26quot;portrait artists%26quot; that sketch you or the art of the the starving-but-future Chagalls... If it%26#39;s the latter, i wouldn%26#39;t recommend Sacre Coeur at all.

Every Saturday there%26#39;s a huge art fair on Boulevard Richard Lenoir (starting at Bastille going north) that features over 300 artists and varies weekly. Really worth a Saturday stroll. I%26#39;d start my quest for local art here.

Approximately how much would you pay for a painting from any of these artists? Ball Park!

|||

Some of the very small paintings, postcard size, run about 15 to 35 Euros depending on the artist. I%26#39;ve seen some larger ones up on Montmartre going for over 1000 Euros. They don%26#39;t bargain very much up there, having a sort of captive audience, but they will lower the price if you buy two. Many also are able to take credit cards.

We visited and purchased art in an artists%26#39; building in the 13th called Le Frigo, there were several floors of a building that was an entire city block long filled with artists displaying their work. There were paintings, illustrations, installations, some artists were selling, some just showing and the price range ran the gamut. You should check this place out, if for nothing else than to have to experience of just simply being in this wonderful, interesting place...

i can describe more about the starving artist at Place du Tertre . They try to draw your face once they see you and ask 10 minutes please. Well, dont feel stupidly stand right there and let them draw your face. They will ask you to purchase the potrait because they just finished the art work for you. very terrible and this is a way them making business. There are in a group of people i believe. why not try other place like Notre Dame. Maybe cheaper.

Fortunately i took the photos of them. everyone can have a look at my site www.williamstudio.com

The art at the Frigo is by serious artists who dedicate thier lives to artistic expression. Some of the people living there have work in the Pompidou Collection, while others may be profs at the Fine Arts School in Paris.

They are in no way to be compared to the artists who gather around the Place du Tertre who paint decorative pieces, usually feature Paris to adorn visitor%26#39;s homes.

I am not judging one over the other, just making it clear that these are two different kinds of art and you can expect the prices to reflect as much. You may find both in a collectors home.

The best original art that I have seen that is accessible to most tourist budgets has been by two different gentlemen hawking thier work on the Pont des Arts outside the Louvre. I have also had success along the bouquinist stands when looking for gifts that are more evocative of Paris.

Oh!! Didn%26#39;t intend to draw a comparison here. Was just sharing an experience. Apologies!
