What to do and where to stay for one day in Paris????

help!

My boyfriend and I are traveling around the world and are spending one night and one day in Paris. I know that is a super short time but it was a last minute decision to take the night train from Barcelona and fly out of Paris to India. So now we need to figure out that one night. We are leaving the US in 13 day! (woohoo) and will be in Paris on the morning of 4th of July and flying out the evening of the 5th.

I would love any suggestions as to what is a must do! I know that are soooo many, but at least I might be able to get a few in. We are also looking for where to stay. We would prefer to be somewhere with in walking distance of ...everything, but since we know that is not possible something near the city center would be great. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, and we would love somewhere that won%26#39;t kill our budget. We at looking at spending max 100 euro and less would be great!

Cheers and Thanks in advance.

PS. We are also traveling to Ireland (Dublin/Galway), Chennai India, and Kuala Lumpur, so if anyone wants to give their two cents about those places that would be great as well.

If you happen to visit Notre Dame, go in an pray for

more time in Paris during your next visit.

The hop on/hop off bus will give you a good orientation

to the core of Paris.

The Rodin Museum and the Cluny are less crowded

so there shouldn%26#39;t be long lines. You have a lot of

choices for meals on rue Mouffeteard.

Best Wishes

I agree with Randy_Silver_Photo about taking l%26#39;Open Bus tour as a general orientation to Paris. If you look for a thread with a topic something like 5.5 hours in Paris I suggested a detailed itinerary using that option in that thread.

I think your train comes in to Gare d%26#39;Austerlitz, so either a hotel in the 5th near the Seine or in the 4th, 11th or 12th near the Place de la Bastille wuld be handy for you. Both are good from th point of view of getting places pretty easily, but at short notice the 11th or 12th might be easier for you to find a hotel. Look at the thread on hotels in the 12th for more about the area.

With such a short time I think you should probably avoid the long lines at places like the Louvre and Tour Eiffel. Where else you might go depends on your particular interests which you do not reveal, but R_S_P%26#39;s suggestions are all good, as usual.

The one building that I think everyone should see in Paris is the Sainte Chapelle, I consider it the most beautiful building in France - but that%26#39;s just one man%26#39;s opinion...

Do make time to just wander and soak up Paris, and do spend an hour or so in a good cafe watching the world go by and planning your return trip.

And have a good dinner in any one of dozens of restaurants mentioned in this forum. A search on restaurants will turn up a bunch of suggestions.

As for Galway, rent a car and get out into the Connemara area and Clifden. If you are there long enough a trip to the Aran Islands would be great. And a dozen or two Galway Bay oysters washed down with Guinness is about as good as life gets...

Just had a sudden thought about Galway. A great place for lunch or dinner (or to stay) in the general area is Sweeney%26#39;s in Oughterard, a few miles from Galway. Actually its proper name is the Oughterard House Hotel, but everyone calls it Sweeney%26#39;s. They have a bar menu at lunchtime which is great and decent value too...

I%26#39;ll tell them to have a pint of Guinness waiting for you if you go.

Hi,

I have a few recommandations for your Paris trip.

I%26#39;d recommend hotel Ibis Gare de lyon Diderot. It should be around 95 a night with breakfast. My parent stay there when they visit me. It%26#39;s a 2 star hotel, with no thrills or soul, but it%26#39;s very clean, nice and 10 meters from the subway. It%26#39;s located right in front of Gare de lyon and the Gare de lyon subway is on line 1, the main line for sightseeing in Paris. Basically from there you%26#39;re 10 minutes from the center of Paris.

If the weather is good, I strongly recommend a boat trip on La Seine. My favorite is Les Vedettes du Pont Neuf. Access is on the Pont Neuf bridge. It%26#39;s close to Notre Dame (very recommended also). The boats leave every half hour and offer a commented tour in english if I recall well. The trip lasts one hour and you%26#39;ll have the opportunity to see most of the monuments from the river.

Walking through Le Marais quarter is always a treat. It%26#39;s a great place at night also, with tons of bars and restaurants.

At night you can also try the bars in rue de Lappe at Bastille. It%26#39;s a 10-15 minutes walk from the Ibis hotel.

Just a warning, while in the subway, beware of pickpockets: they target english speakers.

If you want to take the bus try line 29 direction Saint Lazare. The stop is right behind the Ibis hotel. The 29 line will take you towards the Marais area and the Pompidou museum.

Remember the subway doesn%26#39;t run at nite (it closes after midnight) and most buses close around 9 pm.

Enjoy your trip :)^

If you have plans to see any museums, be advised to check on what the closing day is. Some close on Monday, others on Tuesday (both of the days you%26#39;ll be there).

The l%26#39;Open Tour bus is a good idea -get the 2-day ticket and just use that as your transportation (might need to supplement with some metro tickets in the evenings). You can get off the bus at various stops, look around, get refreshments at a cafe, get back on and go some more. Their website has all the routes mapped out, and lists the stops, plus the prices..etc.

You might want to try booking a room now - I was helping someone on another board for July 3-6 and they tried at least 6-7 hotels before they found an available room.

As to Ireland, do not miss Dingle and Lisdoonvarna.

|||

Dingle is one of my favourite parts of Irealnd, R_S_P.

Have you gone all over the Burren? That%26#39;s pretty amazing. And I love Donegal and the Wicklow Mountains. (Glendalough is incredible. Try wilderness camping there way up the valley some time. You%26#39;re not supposed to but...)

And up around Ben Bulben and that whole %26quot;hidden%26quot; area between Sligo and Enniskillen...

And Achill Island...

And the Antrim hills...

OK, I%26#39;ll stop now...

|||

IrishRovr,

Then there is Doolan and the great

music of Christy Moore.

|||

IrishRover,

I spent time on the Connemara, over the Burren

and shot some great sunset photographs from Clifton,

My favorite purchases in Ireland were:

a vest from Muckross House, Killarney

a Donegal Mist Jacket from Lanisch, County Clare

an Avoca Man hat, County Wicklow

As much as I enjoyed Ireland, it%26#39;s Paris that has me in

her grip; hence my return in mid-September

for the 5th time.

For Paris, yes, the best idea as you just have one day is to take a bus such as L%26#39;OPen Tour to sightseeing Paris...You will have a general of the city and not spend a lot of times running in the metro corridors, trying to find the best route and so on...So I guess it is the best solution.

For accomodation, I would suggest that you stay in the Latin Quartetr, a very ively area in Paris at night (and also during the entire day!)..There are a lot fo restaurants with French food that you have to taste before leaving Paris...In the 4th, near metro Cardinale Lemoine, there is a nice and afforadable hotel called Hotel Vendome Saint Germain. It is a clean and nice 2 star hotel. The street is very quiet, important thing in Paris to sleep well..It is just a few step from Senat building, from Sorbonne...not very far from Luxembourg Garden too.....

You can see it on http://www.paris-hotelvendome.com

Enjoy your stay in Paris!
