Help!! First time in Paris for 10th wedding anniversary...

My wife and I will be in Europe for our first visit to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. We are completely overwhelmed by the choice of hotels and can%26#39;t decide where to stay. My wife has rheumatoid arthritis so we want to stay close to a %26#39;happening%26#39; area where if her joints are sore, we don%26#39;t have to walk lots and can just enjoy watching the local scene together. We would like to be central and want a moderate priced hotel. Is the Latin quarter or the area aound Eiffel tower the best? What are some attractions that don%26#39;t invlove a lot of walking? Please help. Our week in Paris is July 13 to 20.

hi pyar -

Paris is a wonderful choice to celebrate a special occasion!

If I were ytou I would look for a hotel in the lower part of the 6th arrondissement, St-Germain-des-Pres. It is perhaps the best %26quot;peope watching%26quot; area of Paris and packs a lot into a very small area. Almost every block has two or three good restaurants on it, and there must surely be more good cafes per acre in this area than anywhere else in Paris. And there are great shops, patisseries and all the rest too.

Just a little ways south is one of the loveliest city parks anywhere, the Jardin du Luxembourg, and the Louvre, Sainte Chapelle, Cluny museum, and Notre Dame are very close too.

I think the Eiffel Tower area is a bit too far from the livelier parts of Paris for you, and the Marais, my personal favourite, really is a little farther to walk from to most of the places I have mentioned.

Why not the Latin Quarter? Well, mostly because there is a pretty youg crowd there, and sometimes just making your way through the press is an exercise in agility...

Hope this helps - and have a WONDEFUL stay! (I know you will...)

PS: Give us a more precise idea of your budget and I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll come up with more specific hotel ideas...

I agree with the writer above, but with the added note that the metro makes every part of Paris easily accessible. If your hotel is near a metro stop -- it doesn%26#39;t really matter which line, since transfers are free and easy -- you can get anywhere in 30 min. or less.

That said, we LOVED our stay at the very modest, very clean, very cool (look out for that July weather!) hotel Muguet, in the 7th arr. We walked to the Eiffel Tower upon arrival, since we had reservations for lunch at the Jules Verne . . . it was our 10th anniversary, as well!

Anyway, we had a great time, and we wish you much joy.

By the way, I assume you%26#39;re aware of the Bastille Day (July 14) occurring during your stay? Surely that calls for some careful planning . . .

pyar, Bastille day is like the 4th of July in the States, fireworks and celebrations.

Yes the Latin Quarter will be the best area to stay in Paris to be sure that when you go out of your hotel you are in a lively and nice area....just walk along the street and you will feel the Parisian way of life! It is really a nice area.

I can advice you about the Hotel Vendome Saint Germain, a nice and very clean 2 star hotel where I stayed last month...You can have a double room with a view on the floral court, it is very quiet and nice. There is also an elevator, that semm to be a %26quot;must%26quot; for your wife.

People at the hotel are smiling and helpful. It is located in the 5th, near Luxembourg Garden, where you can have a walk with your wife, it is really a very very nice place in Paris.

Have a nice trip!

Thanks so much for the responses. We did not realize about Bastille Day! We arrive in London from Canada that day and were planning to take the Eurostar to Paris. Is this something that we should try to avoid and stay in London overnight? Or is it a great party not to be missed? I think that we will reach Paris on the 14th at about 3pm.

Our budget is about USD 150 to 250 per night if you can think of any hotels that are great and are really close to a good metro station.

Bastille Day is a great day to be in Paris. The entire city is %26quot;en fete%26quot;. That said, it might be better to spend the night in London. One of our Parisian posters mentioned that just geting a taxi on Bastille Day is difficult, though it might be easier from a major train station.

As for hotels, I think somewhere between the St-Germain-des-Pres and Odeon metro stations would work well for you.

Try doing a search in the hotels database - click on the Hotels link at the top of this page - which is searchable by location and price. Look at the listings in the St-Germain-d-P area.

The Hotel Le Clement has been well spoken of in this forum and is in a great location, IMO. About 100m frfom St-G-d-P metro and perhaps 300m from Odeon.
