Budget Eating in Paris?

I am leaving for Paris in a week and I would love some insider tips on good cheap food! My husband and I are on a pretty tight budget, and I would appreciate some advice in this area. We are staying at the Hotel Chopin and we will be there for 6 days. I would love to hear your recommendations. Thank you so much! -Wendy

Bagette sandwiches at the bar of a cafe if it is raining.

Otherwise, bakeries have sandwiches, quiches and pizza-like foods. The cheapest of all, of course, is to self cater, picking up picnic supplies at grocaery stores (ED, Monoprix, Shopi, etc....) or at one of the many markets (a bit more money, but quite a cultural adventure).

Go to %26#39;bistro%26#39; rather than retstaurants (it%26#39;s easy to tell the difference, bistro/ bars will often have people just having a drink). In either case go for the fixed %26#39;menu%26#39; rather than %26#39;a la carte%26#39;, a carafe of house wine is ofetn fine so don%26#39;t worry about the wine menu.

Also search this site for previous threads which may give actual names of cheaper places.

I replied to another thread with this post but I%26#39;ll repeat it so you don%26#39;t miss it:

We live here and eat out (lunch) 3 days a week. We try to find new places at least once a week but we%26#39;ve found ourselves settling-in on a handful of relatively low-cost restaurants that have outstanding food. For instance:

%26quot;le 3%26quot; in the Marais (rue Croix de la Bretonnerie). 3 course meal including 1/4 wine for 15 EUR. This place is really superb. We%26#39;ve eaten there dozens of times and have only been slightly dissappointed once.

%26quot;l%26#39;Industrie%26quot; north of Bastille (rue Sedaine). 2 courses including coffee for between 9 and 12 EUR. Especially great sauces and meat dishes. Wine not included.

%26quot;Bennett%26quot; on the Place du Marche Saint-Honore. Great food in the 15 to 20 EUR range (incl. wine). Great sauces and a Sat/Sun brunch that is more familiar to Americans but still French.

I could go on and on... We never spend more than 16 EUR/person on a meal and we frequent a couple of dozen restaurants. There are plenty of great places so 90 EUR/day should be easy for two people without having to resort to fast food or cheese sandwiches.

Fish is a nice, small, moderately priced restaurant in the St. Germain area. Patricia Wells recommended it and I%26#39;ve eaten there twice, a year apart. It does not disappoint.
